Ultimate solution turns out to be platitudes
Ultimate solution turns out to be platitudes
The Government was today supposed to provide an
ultimate solution to Foreshore and Seabed legislation, but
instead “all we’ve got is a whole lot of platitudes and
nothing new”, says Labour Maori Affairs spokesperson
Parekura Horomia.
“There’s nothing that has been announced in today’s four options that isn’t already in the legislation as far as I can see,” Parekura Horomia said.
“On Monday morning Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples said the Foreshore and Seabed Act would be repealed for ever.
“And then on Monday afternoon Prime Minister John Key said that although the act will be repealed, new legislation will be enacted that won’t be too much different to Labour’s. So who do you believe?”
Parekura Horomia said: “it is very worrying that that Labour’s support for a genuine solution that creates a better life for Maori and for all New Zealanders is now being put at risk for the sake of what looks like nothing more than a blatant political compromise.
“The last thing we want to see is an outcome where New Zealanders are forced back into expensive court cases to reach fair and enduring solutions.”
