Government confirms first part of water con
The Government has finally admitted its new Local Government Bill will allow private ownership of water infrastructure for up to 35 years, say Labour Water spokesperson Brendon Burns and Auckland Issues spokesperson Phil Twyford
Phil Twyford says: “Local Government Minister Rodney Hide tried to conceal the facts in the House this week, but in Parliament today his associate John Carter let the cat out of the bag.
“The Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill opens the door for councils to contract out the building and operation of their water systems,” Phil Twyford said.
“The Government denies this is privatisation. What’s the difference between private ownership and privatisation? As far as Kiwis are concerned, there is no difference, especially when it’s their precious water that’s being owned by someone else for 35 years.”
Local Government Minister Rodney Hide said in Parliament this week the bill's water provisions were no different to a council contracting someone to cut the grass.
In that case, says Brendon Burns, it is like the lawnmowing contractor not only cutting the grass but owning your lawn for the next 35 years.
Mr Twyford and Mr Burns said: “The Government should be honest with New Zealanders that its Bill opens council water supplies to effective privatisation.”
