Youth Week Reminder To Celebrate Young People

Youth Week Reminder To Celebrate Young People

This week marks the beginning of New Zealand’s Youth Week, a week where all New Zealanders should celebrate the achievements of young people and their involvement in our communities, Labour spokesperson for Youth Affairs, Jacinda Ardern said today.

Youth Week, which runs from the 22nd until the 30th of May, aims to highlight positive achievements of people aged 12-24. This year’s theme is Rangatahi Ora: Whānau Ora, which focuses on connecting young people and their families.

“I believe this theme will resonate with youth right across New Zealand,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“So often we only hear the bad stories about young Kiwis, but there are so many positive stories which deserve to be recognised. Youth Week is a fantastic reminder that we should celebrate the contribution that young people make all year round.”

Jacinda Ardern said Youth Week is also an opportunity for the government and community leaders to consider what more can be done to support young Kiwis.

“A recent report released by Statistics New Zealand highlighted that 57% of young people still live at home with their families,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“Young people are relying on their families to help support them. The economic downturn has had a major effect on youth unemployment figures.

"The government needs to do more to protect the future of our young people. I hope Youth Week will serve as a reminder to them that their decision making needs to factor in future generations."
