Green Party congratulates Charles Chauvel
The Green Party congratulated Charles Chauvel on his appointment to the new Global Commission on HIV and the Law today.
“Charles has worked for many years on the legal dimensions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New Zealand, usually on a volunteer basis,” Green Party Health spokesperson and former Executive Director of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation Kevin Hague said.
"He was centrally involved in the campaign to secure the legal right to freedom from discrimination for those infected and affected by HIV.
“This appointment is well-deserved recognition of his longstanding contribution. It also means the Commission will have access to his expertise for its important work.
"HIV/AIDS highlights the most difficult and intractable problems in each society that it touches. In particular, every country has to face up to issues of marginalisation, stigma and discrimination, human rights, access to education, condoms and treatment and how the law can respond to infection to best facilitate prevention and support.
“The work of Mr Chauvel on this Commission will be an incredibly important contribution to every country in the world, including New Zealand," said Mr Hague.
Mr. Hague was also pleased by the appointment of the highly-respected Australian Hon. Justice Michael Kirby to the Commission.
"Michael Kirby has already made a profound contribution to human rights on the world stage, he has been a great friend to the cause of human rights in New Zealand and is an excellent appointment to the Commission. The Green Party congratulates him also."
