Lack of sustainable development will hurt Super City
The hope of building a sustainable Auckland Super City is under threat by the relegation of sustainable development positions to a fifth tier job under Auckland Council’s workforce plan, the Green Party said today.
“One of the core purposes of local government is the sustainable development of communities. The low ranking for sustainability means smart ways to make Auckland a better city will be lost in middle management,” Green Party Super City Spokesperson David Clendon said.
The Local Government Act 2002 section 3(d) “provides for local authorities to play a broad role in promoting the social, economic, environmental and cultural wellbeing of their communities, taking a sustainable development approach”.
“By not focussing on sustainable development Auckland will be hurt in the future,” said Mr Clendon.
“Sustainability needs a top level focus according it the status it deserves under the Local Government Act.”
Mr Clendon said Aucklanders can have a better planned city that will be healthier, more environmentally friendly and ultimately save rate-payers money if sustainable development is taken seriously.
“We know that sustainable development is the way of the future,” said Mr Clendon.
“It is necessary to start the transition now to future proof Auckland’s economic, social and environmental wellbeing.
