ARC decision welcomed

ARC decision welcomed

The decision made by the Auckland Regional Council to retain and refurbish Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup has been welcomed by Jacinda Ardern, Labour List MP based in Auckland Central.

The decision was announced following an emergency meeting between the Government and Auckland Regional Council earlier today.

“The ARC has had a tough job. The timelines have been short and the expectations high. But it simply never made sense to demolish part of Auckland’s heritage in favour of erecting a temporary structure.

“The ARC’s decision is an acknowledgement that, for too long, generations of Aucklanders have seen the consequences of decisions made in haste; decisions made without a long-term plan in mind.

“The chairman of the ARC, Mike Lee has played a crucial supporting role in ensuring that Auckland’s architectural and maritime history is not demolished simply because the city is hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

“With reports indicating that the Government, in particular Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully, is unhappy with the move by the ARC instead of stalling progress, the Government needs to support this local decision made by the people of Auckland and get on with the business of preparing Auckland for the Rugby World Cup," said Jacinda Ardern.
