Pacific families pay price of Key’s broken promise

Pacific families to pay the price of John Key’s broken promise

A few days before the election in 2008 John Key promised our communities that he would not increase GST. This Friday, 1 October, John Key will break his word. National will increase GST to 15 %, MP for Mangere Su’a William Sio said today.

“GST will increase by 20% from 12.5 to 15 % on 1 October – this means already struggling Pacific families will bear the brunt of price increases as the cost of food, power and children’s clothing go up.

“This increase in the cost of living for families could not come at a worse time for Pacific communities as unemployment for Pacific people still remains twice as bad as the national average, with 11,500 Pacific people out of work and already struggling to pay bills and put food on the table.

“Coupled with an increase in GST are tax cuts. But John Key’s Tax cuts for the rich will not help families on low incomes cope with GST increases.
"Our Pacific communities are readying themselves for the annual White Sunday preparations.

“Parents in my community of Mangere have come to me distressed at the thought of price increases just before Lotu Tamaiti when every child is treated by their parents to new clothes and a hearty lunch as families celebrate the recognition of their children’s value in their family,” says Su’a William Sio.

"Labour understands the extra pressure families are under as a result of price increases. That is why Labour leader Phil Goff announced one commitment we will take to the next general election. Labour will remove National’s 15 per cent GST from fresh fruit and vegetables. Taking GST off healthy, unprocessed fruit and vegetables helps gives families some relief from the pressure of increased prices. And making fresh fruit and vege more affordable will help our Pacific communities become healthier communities.

I have invited community groups and organisations to meet with myself and Labour Leader Phil Goff to discuss October 1 changes at Mangere Town Centre between 12-2pm this Friday.

Media are welcome to attend.
