National’s ECE promises worthless

National’s ECE promises worthless

Education Minister Anne Tolley confirmed today that 20 hours Early Childhood Education funding is under review by a taskforce she set up three weeks ago, Labour Early Childhood Education spokesperson Sue Moroney says.

“The Government has already broken its election promise, by cutting the two top subsidy levels for 20 hours ECE after promising they would keep existing subsidies intact for the Labour initiative,” Sue Moroney said.

“Placing 20 hours ECE under review is yet another betrayal of that election promise.

“National also promised to improve adult : child ratios, but there is already evidence their funding cuts are doing the opposite as ECE providers shed staff to cope with the cuts which take effect from November 1.

“In Parliament today Anne Tolley claimed she stood by all her statements on ECE, yet she failed to answer why, if her Government was living up to its election promise, early childhood education centres were reducing staff and centres were putting up fees,” Sue Moroney said.
