Kiwis in Australia need assurances on flood relief
Confusion about New Zealand citizens living in Australia eligibility for flood relief packages needs to be resolved and quickly, Labour Leader Phil Goff says.
“Reports are beginning to emerge that New Zealanders who moved to Australia after 2001 may not be eligible for flood relief assistance, despite them having lived and paid taxes in that country for many years,” Phil Goff said.
“In New Zealand Australians living permanently in our country would be treated exactly the same as other New Zealanders in this situation.
“New Zealand citizens living in Australia should likewise be treated exactly the same as everyone else affected by this crisis.
“John Key must urgently take this issue up with the Australian Government.
“Kiwis working in Australia who have lost their homes and their jobs because of this natural disaster and through no fault of their own need help now,” Phil Goff said.
