Tourism sector needs focused
support
Labour's Tourism policy contains a pragmatic and achievable mix of actions and ideas to enhance and support the sector for both the international and domestic markets, says Tourism spokesperson Kelvin Davis.
“Tourism is a vital part of New Zealand’s economy,” Kelvin Davis said.
“We need to ensure we continue the great momentum from the Rugby World Cup in promoting and developing tourism in New Zealand.
“High up on Labour’s list of ideas is a commitment of $4.5m over three years to promote Maori tourism.
"Maori tourism gives New Zealand a real point of difference and we want to continue to enhance that.
“Labour will also support a range of infrastructure development projects, including supporting the Auckland Council to develop an international standard Cruise Terminal.
“We want to ensure that as a country we are offering permanent attractions for large-scale operators, such as cruise ship companies.
“Labour will also support Regional Tourism Organisations to promote the unique features of each region both to international and domestic markets.
“To continue to develop the tourism sector we will support tourism focussed research in order to make the best tourism policy decisions.
“We need to make sure that when tourists come here we are giving them what they need.
“Our policy recognises the importance and value of tourism to New Zealand's economy.
“The tourism policy also links in with Labour's communication technology plans to improve broadband and mobile services.
“The tourism sector
is hugely important to this country and we need to enhance
and protect the New Zealand brand,” Kelvin Davis said
