Green Party Statement on National Party billboard vandalism

"I have been advised this morning that a Green Party member Jolyon White, who is also the partner of my Executive Assistant, has co-ordinated the defacing of the National Party billboards," said Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman.

"I believe that the defacing of billboards is vandalism and condemn these actions. While the actions are those of individuals, not the Green Party, I am incredibly disappointed by what they have done, especially given my and the Green Party's preference for a positive and clean campaign.

"The Green Party does not support their activities and I was not aware of them until this morning. I have been advised that the action was co-ordinated through personal networks and contacts of Mr White.

"Of all the parties, the Greens are the most acutely aware of the impact of these sorts of activities. I know how many volunteer hours go into putting up billboards and I want to say sorry to the National Party volunteers.

"I have spoken with John Key this morning to inform him of what I know and to apologise to him. I have also offered whatever assistance is necessary for the vandalism to be rectified.

"It is my deep wish for this election to be fought clean and fair on the issues that face New Zealand.

"We have also advised the Electoral Commission and offered to assist with any enquiries that they may undertake."
