Māori Women’s Sevens Lead the World Again

Māori Women’s Sevens Lead the World Again

Maori Party Sport and Recreation spokesperson and Waiariki MP, Te Ururoa Flavell is praising the efforts by the Aotearoa Māori Women’s 7’s team at this year’s Roma International Sevens Championship where they took out the tournament for the third year in a row.

“This goes to show the extent to which Māori are leading in sport and recreation not only nationally, but internationally,” said Mr Flavell.

“This team is truly world-class – they have shown they have the talent and expertise to not only excel in the Roma Sevens, but are also six time winners of the women’s championship in Hong Kong (2002-2007).”

“Coach Peter Joseph has worked tirelessly to organise the logistics, including support funding, transport, and accommodation – all of this on top of the regular rugby trainings.”

“And with the commitment by the players, which involved whanau sacrifice of time and financial contributions, the team deserve all that they’ve achieved,” he adds.

“The Maori Party has constantly advocated for support for the Aotearoa Maori Women’s Sevens – who have had to go to extreme measures to gain the support they should be entitled to as a top quality New Zealand representative squad.

“We particularly acknowledge the support of Te Puni Kokiri and the Minister of Maori Affairs who have recognised the potential in this squad as the world-leaders they are.”

“It is fantastic to see their on-going success and it is even more fuel to the call for more Māori rep teams to participate at the international level.”

“Imagine the possibilities.”
