Senior Citizens Hit By Aged Care Ambush
New Zealand First has accused the Government of a sneak attack on senior citizens by not specifically mentioning in the Budget significant changes to Aged Care.
Associate Senior Citizens spokesperson Barbara Stewart says Government legislation to link the Aged Care asset threshold to the rate of inflation is mean-spirited.
“Private saving has been flagged by the Government as a way for all New Zealanders to help dig the country out of the mess it’s in.
“But this piece of tacky legislation provides a disincentive for senior citizens to save when a good portion of their savings could be siphoned off to pay for their care.”
Mrs Stewart says the Government should have asked Grey Power and other seniors organisations to have a say on the matter before the law was changed.
“They have totally ignored the views of this vulnerable section of society by sneaking this law through Parliament.”
