conditions
A “Jobs That Count” campaign has the full support of Labour, the party’s Labour Relations spokesperson Iain Lees-Galloway says.
Organised by the Meat Workers Union, the campaign aims to put the spotlight on job insecurity in the meat processing industry.
“People working in the sector face some of the most difficult working conditions in New Zealand. Their risk of injury is high and their work is insecure.
“While increasing numbers of New Zealanders are being affected by unfair employment practices such as zero-hour contracts, meat workers have been facing these issues for years. National’s employment law changes have only made conditions worse.
“Collective employment agreements adhere to the law and provide terms and conditions that are fairer to workers than the Government’s miserable minimum standards. Yet National has made it harder for working people to bargain collectively.
“Labour wholeheartedly backs this campaign for better pay, regular work and safer workplaces. Only by working together will we build an economy that provides jobs that count,” Iain Lees-Galloway said.
