Police must re-open Roastbusters case now

Police must re-open the investigation into the teenage sexual assault cases irrespective of whether they receive further complaints or not, Labour's Women's Affairs spokesperson Sue Moroney says.

“The Police Minister confirmed to me last November that Police do not need a complaint in order to pursue sexual assault charges.

“Given the bungling identified by yesterday's Independent Police Complaints Authority report, Police should not require further complaints to be laid before they act.

“It is important for New Zealand women that Police implement the recommendations of the IPCA report, but it is equally important that justice is done in the cases that were so badly handled.

“It is not necessary for the victims to lodge new complaints for this to occur. They have already been through enough,” Sue Moroney says.
