Privatisation of Prisons Down the Drain Where It Belongs
It is about time the government stepped in to attempt to rectify the mess they’ve created by privatising New Zealand prisons but it’s still not good enough, says New Zealand First.
“The Department of Corrections should not only takeover management at Mt Eden – Serco’s contract should be terminated altogether, and Wiri needs to be next on the chopping block,” says Corrections Spokesperson Mahesh Bindra.
“If Serco is no longer managing Mt Eden then the government needs to stop financially propping up this ill-fated contract immediately.
“The Minister of Corrections Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga is ultimately responsible for this fiasco. He along with Serco should be gone.
“Privatisation of prisons through Serco is one of the worst ideas this government has had, not to mention a waste of taxpayers’ money.
“Serco has proven they can’t manage prisons and have one of the worst track records we have seen with disastrous results in Australia, the UK, and now here,” says Mr Bindra.
