24 November 2015

Waiariki MP, Te Ururoa Flavell, will lace up his running shoes tomorrow and join 45-year-old Kahira-Rata Olley as she begins her epic 250 kilometre run which calls for an end to domestic and sexual abuse.

Ms Olley, who is a survivor of sexual and domestic abuse, is jogging from Rotorua to Napier to raise awareness about this nationwide problem.

The five-day campaign run, called Running to STOP IT, gets underway on White Ribbon Day.

Mr Flavell, who is a White Ribbon Ambassador, says “Kahira-Rata has shown incredible courage as a survivor of domestic and sexual abuse by sharing her personal story as well as encouraging others to speak out.”

Regular updates on Ms Olley’s campaign journey will be posted on the Facebook page, Running to STOP IT.

“Although I won’t be running alongside Ms Olley for the entire five days, I wholeheartedly support her”, says Mr Flavell.

Kahira-Rata Olley will begin her journey with Mr Flavell and others at 7am tomorrow from Puketawhero Park on Te Ngae Road. Mr Flavell will join Ms Olley on the last leg of the run outside of Flaxmere on Sunday.

A Whānau Day, which will feature various speakers including Ms Olley, will be held at the end of the run.
