Government must support Pacific spend on climate change

The Government must support vulnerable Pacific island states who want to mitigate the damage from climate change, says Pacific Climate Change Issues Spokesperson Sua William Sio.

“Tuvalu has had a bid for a US$100 million flood protection scheme rejected, and has instead been granted US$30 million to build dykes just around existing homes. This means the rest of Tuvalu is under threat.

“John Key has a moral obligation to be straight up with our Pacific neighbours about what help his Government is prepared to offer.

“What’s the point of having billions of dollars made available for rescue projects under the Green Climate Fund, if the Pacific nations can’t even access it because they have to jump through hoops they don’t have the resources for.

“Time is running out for vulnerable Pacific nations. In Paris our Government has sat on its hands over the demand by Pacific nations for a 1.5 degree limit on temperature increase.

“The Government has clearly forgotten it pitched its case for a seat on the United Nation’s Security Council on the basis of its Pacific leadership.

“As the clock ticks away in Paris, we are not seeing the leadership the Pacific needs from the Prime Minister,“ says Su’a William Sio.
