Limiting global temperatures to 1.5 degrees is a welcome step towards ensuring the survival of the Pasifika’s most vulnerable nations, says Labour’s Pacific Climate Change Issues spokesperson Su’a William Sio.
“Congratulations to the Pasifika leaders who lobbied hard and achieved ambitious goals. It’s great to hear the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon say that the most vulnerable nations have been heard.
“Our Pasifika neighbours face a much healthier future now that the world is prepared to make positive changes and I look forward to leading Labour’s Pasifika caucus in championing positive climate changes.
“This historic moment is something to be celebrated and we can now focus on the goals and targets required to meet international obligations.
“The National Government was fence sitting for a long time on this issue while New Zealand suffered an embarrassing drop in the world climate rankings from 35th to 42nd. We were ranked in the bottom 5 for climate change policy.
“Climate change has already caused considerable problems in the Pacific and I look forward to leading a team, focussed on our Pasifika neighbours, that develops a blueprint for a healthier sustainable future,” says Su’a William Sio.
