Governor-General pays tribute to Pope John Paul II

The Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright has paid tribute to Pope John Paul II, saying his passing marks the end of an era.

"Pope John Paul II was a world leader in turbulent times," Dame Silvia said. "He was a man of compassion and a man of strong values."

Dame Silvia said New Zealanders had fond memories of his visit here in 1986, which also saw him visit Government House in Wellington.

She said Pope John Paul II would be mourned by Catholics and many others in New Zealand and around the world.

Both the Vatican and the Catholic Church in New Zealand will receive letters of condolence from the Governor-General.
