What Civilised Society?

Opinion piece by Garth McVicar

30th July 2007

What Civilised Society?

If it wasn't so sad - the outcome so devastating - for the children involved it would be laughable!!!

The very same week a bunch of self acclaimed experts were meeting in Wellington to discuss the, "Role of Parole in a Civilised Society" five people were actively abusing a three-year-old girl in Rotorua.

Baby Nia now fights for her life in Starship hospital after what police say was horrific abuse over a sustained period of time.

If this wasn't bad enough another twelve month old baby was also being brutally assaulted in the same town.

New Zealand now rates as one of the worst countries in the civilised world for domestic violence and child abuse.

Hardly civilised. but I doubt the experts in Wellington would even see the connection.

The experts would have us believe those found guilty of abusing these children should be given parole before serving their full sentence, many have enjoyed Her Majesty's kindness many times before.and been released at a fraction of their Judge given sentence.

Some of these "experts" even argue the abusers are actually "victims" and that all they lack is love and kindness.

This country is in deep trouble - a crisis is on us - the victims of these horrific crimes are you and I - not just the children - as society declines we all pay.

New Zealand does not need any more of this politically correct excuse driven mentality, wrong is wrong and right is right - no grey - no excuses!

Until the experts who met in Wellington to discuss the "Role of parole in a civilized society" realize that society has a right also - a right to expect a certain standard of behaviour from ALL of its members ALL of the time - nothing will change.

Those who commit these horrific crimes do not belong in the same society as the rest of us - they must be removed - without parole!

For every "right" there is an obligation - for every privilege - there is a duty.

I'm glad I am just a cocky - to me there is no grey - just right and wrong.
