Alternative Tax spend idea takes to the street

For immediate release; 30 September 2008

Media Release: Alternative Tax spend idea takes to the street
Social Justice Commissioner/ Supporters of giveitup.org.nz

The efficacy and ethics of tomorrow's Tax cuts are being challenged by supporters of a website that poses this simple challenge: How will you spend your Tax cut?

In addition to the website - www.giveitup.org.nz - which features "vox pop" interviews with people on the streets of Wellington, supporters of the idea are also distributing posters (see attached artwork) today in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and several provincial centres.

The supporters group is also citing international research that goes a long way to proving that higher-tax societies have fewer social problems. Their key reference is the 2006 Canadian report"The Social Benefits and Economic Costs of Taxation: A comparison of High- and Low- Tax Countries". This report was published by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and can be found at http://www.policyalternatives.ca/Reports/2006/12/ReportsStudies1507/
