Earth Hour: Return To The Dark Ages
Speaking from Hong Kong, Libertarianz Party leader Richard McGrath dismissed this weekend’s Earth Hour as the nightmarish creation of backward thinking, death-worshipping Luddites.
“One only has to come to Hong Kong, one of the freest countries on the planet, to witness first-hand what humans can achieve,” said Dr McGrath. “Last night I took the ferry to Kowloon, and looked back at the spectacular buildings and lights of the Central district. The lights of Nathan Road and the night market were blazing, and at 10 pm. the streets were still packed with shoppers,” he added.
“Why anyone would want to darken our towns and cities is beyond me,” he added. “Only countries like North Korea have night-time blackouts, as satellite photographs demonstrate. To reject modern technology such as electricity and other forms of energy is to step back into the Dark Ages, where human productivity was limited by the environment. Nowadays, thanks to the division of labour and relatively free trade, humans can easily reshape their environment to improve wealth and quality of life.”
Dr McGrath has a word of advice for the supporters of Earth Hour. “To those who think this is a good idea, I say why stop at one hour? Disconnect your electricity and water supply, sell your house, cars and other labour saving appliances, and find yourself a nice comfy cave where you and your family can live, at one with nature and with a minimal carbon footprint. Meanwhile, I will lift a glass to those who have made twenty-first century life so comfortable and enjoyable, while watching the Hong Kong Sevens Rugby.”
