Auckland Council candidate nominations open

Nominations for candidates for Auckland Council open tomorrow, with 170 positions including the mayor’s, up for election in October.

Elections are also being held for representatives on Auckland’s three district health boards and six licensing trusts.

Potential candidates have until midday on 20 August to get their nomination and supporting information to the Electoral Office.

Electoral officer Dale Ofsoske says that anyone can stand for the council, as long as they are over the age of 18, are a New Zealand citizen and are enrolled on the electoral roll.

“Information about the electoral roll listing has gone out to voters, so potential candidates need to ensure their details are correct as soon as possible,” Mr Ofsoske says.

“Those thinking of standing should first either contact the Electoral Office, or go to the Auckland Council website, www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz, to get the detailed Candidates Information Booklet. This has all the information required, including how to lodge nominations and what other information is required.”

While there is a month to put in applications, Mr Ofsoske urges people to find out the details of what is required as soon as possible, to allow enough time to gather the required information.
