What's your view about Wellington’s environment?
What's your view about Wellington’s environment?
What’s your view on how we should look after Wellington’s air, waterways, coasts, soils and biodiversity?
It’s a question that Greater Wellington Regional Council is asking Wellingtonians in workshops at six locations over the next few weeks. The workshops are the first step in developing a new regional plan for managing these natural resources.
Greater Wellington’s environmental monitoring shows that the region’s natural resources are increasingly under threat from business and urban development.
And there’s a groundswell of concern in communities throughout the region over pollution in rivers and streams, coastal erosion, air quality, and the increasing demand for water.
The aim of the workshops is to get as much community input as possible, using a “bottom-up” approach, says Greater Wellington’s Environment Group manager Nigel Corry.
“Wellingtonian’s enjoy a great natural environment, ranging from hills cloaked in native bush, to streams with native fish life, and rugged coastal areas.
“Anyone involved in food gathering, recreation, land development, environmental tourism, farming, ecology, fishing and hunting, drainage, water use, adventure sports, and cultural heritage has a stake in keeping this environment healthy, and enhancing it.”
