Council Candidates In Close Christchurch Wards Increase Margins

Candidates standing for election to the Christchurch City Council who had small margins after the progress result this afternoon have slightly increased their leads over the next highest polling candidate. This follows the release of a preliminary result tonight.

In the Riccarton-Wigram ward, Jimmy Chen is the highest polling candidate with 8,604 votes. After the preliminary result, Helen Broughton continues to be the next highest polling candidate with 7,343 votes. Bob Shearing received 7,314 votes (a difference of 29 votes).

In the Burwood-Pegasus ward, Chrissie Williams is the highest polling candidate with 9,661 votes. After the preliminary result, Glenn Livingstone is still the next highest polling candidate with 4,796 votes but David East has 4,758 votes (a difference of 38 votes).

Two candidates from each of these wards will sit on the Council.

According to the preliminary result, at this stage the Council would include:

- Ngaire Button
- Jamie Gough
- Sally Buck
- Chrissie Williams
- Glenn Livingstone
- Jimmy Chen
- Helen Broughton
- Yani Johanson
- Tim Carter
- Sue Wells
- Barry Corbett
- Claudia Reid.

Following the preliminary result, Mayor-elect Bob Parker has received 69, 621 votes while his closest rival, Jim Anderton, has 53, 024 votes (a difference of 16, 597 votes).

The final count of votes will begin on Monday 11 October. An estimated 1600 special votes will also be processed and counted. Electoral Officer Clare Sullivan will make a final declaration of results once the final count is completed.
