Defence science review now accepting public submissions

Defence science review now accepting public submissions

The independent expert panel reviewing the provision of defence science and technology support in New Zealand – and the role of the Defence Technology Agency (DTA) - is now accepting public submissions.

The panel members are Rear Admiral (Rtd) David Ledson, Mr Neville Jordan and Dr Helen Anderson.

Panel lead, David Ledson, says defence science and technology is a ‘capability multiplier’ for the New Zealand Defence Force, and in an increasingly complex and technological world the Defence Force needs expert scientific and technological advice on important issues that relate to defence capability. He added that the panel was very keen that the review looked at significant science and technology issues from a perspective that enabled opportunities and benefits related to the sector to be considered in a broader national context.

The panel has begun talking with interested stakeholders in New Zealand – the security sector, science community, business and others – as well as looking to overseas experiences and models of successfully delivering defence science and technology.

Submissions from any interested parties will be welcomed by the panel. A special section of the New Zealand Defence Force website [www.nzdf.mil.nz] has been created to allow people to provide their views on five key questions identified by the review panel.

The close off date for responses to this public consultation phase is 8am Monday 14 February, 2011.

A final report on the findings of the Review is to go to the Minister of Defence in late March, 2011.
