MFAT: Egypt Travel Advisory

The unrest and demonstrations in Egypt continue and there are also now reports of looting and opportunistic crime.

The New Zealand Embassy in Cairo will be open tomorrow.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and our Embassy in Cairo have been contacted by a number of New Zealanders who have had their travel plans disrupted by the demonstrations seeking information and advice on the situation.
Local communications links have been disrupted so making contact with friends and family in Egypt may be difficult.

There are 282 New Zealanders registered with the Ministry as being in Egypt. There are likely to be other unregistered New Zealanders in Egypt due to tourist travel.

New Zealanders in Egypt should avoid areas where protests are occurring, monitor local media reporting, and ensure they adhere to instructions from local authorities, including curfews that have been imposed.

Cairo airport is open. New Zealanders in Egypt with concerns about the security situation should consider leaving if it is safe to do so.

New Zealanders in Egypt are advised to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the safetravel website - www.safetravel.co.nz

New Zealanders with friends and family in Egypt should attempt to make contact with them directly in the first instance and if there are serious concerns about their safety they should contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 04 439 8000.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises against all tourist and non-essential travel to Egypt due to the demonstrations.
