Labour Sheds 20% Of Its Vote

Labour Sheds 20% Of Its Vote In Latest One News Colmar Brunton

+ GREENS GRAB LABOUR VOTE

Sunday July 17, 2011

Labour has dropped from 34% to 27% in the party vote, shedding 20% of its vote in the latest ONE News Colmar Brunton Poll.

National is up one percentage point and could easily govern alone with 53% support.

The poll of 1008 eligible voters, taken between July 9th and July 13th was taken in the period where Labour’s new capital gains tax policy was widely reported in the media, although the polling had finished by the time of Labour’s actual announcement on Thursday afternoon.

“You can’t say this is a verdict on Labour ‘s actual policy,” says Political Editor Guyon Espiner. “But given the main details of the capital gains tax had been in the media for the entire polling period it is hard to escape the conclusion that the policy has had a negative impact on the party’s support.”

Espiner said that looking back through Colmar Brunton’s records from the beginning of 2002 he could not find a lower party vote score for Labour.

The Greens have sucked up some of Labour’s support rising four points to 10% support.

Optimism about the economy also continues to rise in the latest poll, which has a margin of error of 3.1%.
