Father Peter Murname (Waihopai Ploughshares) to speak at St Andrew’s on The Terrace
Dominican priest Father Peter Murname will be delivering a lunchtime lecture at St Andrew’s on The Terrace tomorrow (Thursday 4 August) at 12:15 pm in the church. The lecture is part of the ongoing event “EnemyLove: the universal pathway to peace.”
“EnemyLove” is in response to the forthcoming appearance by Father Murname, Adrian Leason and Sam Land in the High Court on Monday 8 August. After their acquittal for their disarming of the Waihopai Spy Base in 2008, the Crown is now suing the three men for civil damages.
From August 1 to 8, Christian peacemakers and supporters are participating in a fast and living onsite at St Andrew’s. Peacemakers from a range of faith traditions are spending time joining with them in a cycle of prayer and conversation.
“Going without food for a week is one small way we can be in solidarity with the hungry of the world. The trillions of US dollars spend on war-making is theft from the plates of the poor,” says Sam Land.
Participants are remembering in prayer all the victims of war, victims of rendition and torture, and those who are imprisoned because they are whistle-blowers. They are also praying for the perpetrators of war and violence, for those who have embraced hatred leading to violence and who have rejected peace-making, nonviolence and enemy love. They have created a peace shrine in the Lounge at St Andrew’s and people are welcome to bring symbols to share.
