NZ Soldier Dies in Afghanistan – Release 1

A New Zealand Defence Force soldier serving with the NZ Provincial Reconstruction Team has died in an incident in Afghanistan today.

The incident occurred at Forward Patrol Base Romero at approximately 1100hrs (NZ time) today. The NZ Defence Force can confirm that the soldier died later in hospital. His death was not the result of a combat operation.

Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones said, “We are saddened by this loss and, on behalf of the entire New Zealand Defence Force, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family, colleagues and friends of the soldier.”

Next of kin are in the process of being informed.

“Our soldiers continue to acquit themselves magnificently and the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team continues to do great work in Bamyan Province. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway,” Lieutenant General Jones said.

The New Zealand Defence Force will not release the name of the soldier or circumstances surrounding the incident today in order to allow time for the wider family to be informed.

A media conference with further information will be held at Defence House, Wellington tomorrow (Wednesday) time to be advised. Until then no further comment will be made.
