NZ MP to join Commonwealth parliamentarians in Samoa

NZ MP to join Commonwealth parliamentarians in Samoa

New Zealand will be represented by Jonathan Young MP at the 23rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Seminar in Apia from 24 to 30 May 2012, the Speaker, Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith announced today.

“The CPA is a network of parliamentarians representing 30 per cent of the world’s population who share a commitment to strengthening the institution of Parliament,” Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith said.

“New Zealand has been closely involved in assisting smaller and emerging parliaments become accountable and more effective and this seminar is an important opportunity to ensure that this good work continues throughout the Commonwealth.”

The seminar is an annual event arranged by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) for its members throughout the Commonwealth and is this year being hosted by the Samoan Parliament.

The location of the seminar holds special resonance this year, as 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Samoa gaining independence from New Zealand trusteeship lasting from 1919 to 1962.

Delegates will meet in Apia under the theme of strengthening parliamentary democracy. Topics discussed will include the inherent functions of Parliament; parliamentary law, practice and procedures; and parliamentary ethics, transparency and accountability.

Jonathan Young will be delivering presentations on the relationship between Parliament and Civil Society and Parliament and the media, as well as moderating a session on support for members of Parliament.
