Ngati Kahungunu to Take the Government’s Announcement on Water to the People
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporation said today that the Government’s announcement to proceed with the share sell down in state owned power companies and reject Shares Plus was an issue that would be discussed with hapū and whānau widely before making any decisions about how to proceed.
“Kei te hapū te mana, kei te iwi te mahi,” said Ngahiwi Tomana, Chairman of the Iwi authority.
“Water is a taonga of fundamental importance and therefore it is critical that Ngāti Kahungunu discuss the Government’s announcement amongst our people to determine the best way forward for ngā hapū o Ngāti Kahungunu.
“There is a process that Ngāti Kahungunu must go through before any more water flows under the bridge. We will continue to support the views of hapū in protecting this taonga.
“Ngāti Kahungunu seek to engage constructively with the Government to protect and promote the interests of Ngāti Kahungunu to freshwater.
“We will also engage with other hapū and iwi leaders who will be affected by this announcement. Water is a critical life-force for all of Ngāti Kahungunu and we have an obligation to preserve and protect it for future generations.”
