Support Oxfam’s Cyclone Pam Appeal at any Countdown store nationwide

18 March 2015: From today, Wednesday 18 March, Countdown customers can donate to the Oxfam New Zealand Cyclone Pam Appeal for Vanuatu at any Countdown store across the country.

Donations can be made in specially marked donation boxes at the checkout, or you can make a donation during your supermarket shop at the EFTPOS terminal.

All proceeds go to the Oxfam New Zealand Cyclone Pam Appeal.

Oxfam New Zealand spokesperson, Gwen Green, says: “Cyclone Pam has made a direct hit on Vanuatu, and is likely to be seen as one of the worst disasters ever seen in the Pacific.

“With up to 90% of the buildings in Port Vila alone seriously damaged or destroyed and reports of unprecedented damage to crops and livelihoods, the scale of humanitarian need will be enormous.

“Oxfam is on the ground in Vanuatu already and our priority is to provide shelter, clean water and sanitation to people, especially those left homeless. We remain deeply concerned for people living in Vanuatu’s remote outer islands, which will be harder to reach with emergency aid.

“Donations from generous New Zealanders are a vital way we can bring this life-saving aid to the people who have been affected, and support those families who have lost everything,” says Green.

Countdown’s Acting Managing Director, Steve Donohue, says: “Our 174 Countdown stores nationwide will be assisting with this fundraising effort. We want to do what we can to help our Pacific neighbours get back on their feet following this terrible disaster.”
