St Beads gets support from Sensible Sentencing Trust

The SST asks, “Have our schools been stripped of the right to impose rules of accountability, boundaries, consequences and discipline [ABCD]?

The Sensible Sentencing Trust has come out in support of St Beads College after teen rowers Jack Bell,16, and Jordan Kennedy, 17, were removed from the Maadi Cup rowing team after being given formal warnings by police and the Aviation Security Service for jumping on a baggage conveyor at Auckland Airport on Friday.

Trust Spokesman, Garth McVicar, said his phone had been running hot since the High Court injunction overturned the College decision and effectively allowed the boys to compete in the Maadi Cup.
“While most people are saying they understand that boys-will-be-boys and get into mischief at times they are irate that the High Court decision has undermined St Bedes authority and ability to discipline unruly behaviour.”
“It is not so much the seriousness of what the boys did that is the problem, but rather the over-the-top reaction of a parent (chairman of the school's rowing club, no less) who has completely undermined the authority of the school. People are questioning if he would have taken legal action if his son had not been a member of the rowing team.”

“Our society expects our education system will set values for our young people including responsibility and the need for accountability for ones actions. St Beads set the rules which the boys signed up to, the College has a right to expect support from the parents and the wider community.”

McVicar said, “This appears to be a case of a parent's self-interest setting a poor example to our youth.”

People who are calling me are asking if this decision means schools have now been stripped of the right to impose rules of accountability, boundaries, consequences and discipline. [ABCD]

“Is it any wonder we live in an age when respect for authority is declining?”
