More than $5million has been given to core environment and heritage projects thanks to the Lottery Environment and Heritage committee.
The committee made 37 grants, totalling $5,140,320 in its May 2016 meeting.
Recipients were from around New Zealand and included Antarctic Heritage Trust, Hone Tuwhare Charitable Trust, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Maui & Hector’s Dolphin Defenders NZ Incorporated, and Methven Historical Society Incorporated.
Of the total amount $260,000 was given to Antarctic Heritage Trust to conserve Sir Edmund Hillary’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition Historic Hut and artefact collection in Antarctica.
Another $292,968 was presented to Hawke’s Bay Regional Council to help with wetland restoration at the Waitangi Regional Park.
The Hone Tuwhare Charitable Trust received $100,000 which will be used to restore the Hone Tuwhare Crib, and construct a new writers/artists residency facility at Kaka Point, on the south coast of the South Island.
Maui & Hector’s Dolphin Defenders NZ Incorporated received $9999 towards a project based salary as part of its citizen science initiative. This will be used to positively engage local communities in conservation efforts of the Maui and Hector’s dolphin in New Zealand.
Methven Historical Society Incorporated was also given $185,000 to construct a building to house both the Library and Museum.
The Lottery Environment and Heritage committee prioritises projects that preserve aspects of New Zealand’s natural, physical and cultural heritage.
Presiding committee member Bridget Mosley says the purpose of the committee is to provide grants to one-off projects that foster the conservation, preservation and promotion of New Zealand’s natural, physical and cultural heritage.
“This funding will help projects around New Zealand continue, make a difference, restore, protect and keep local communities engaged. We are thrilled to be part of the success of these projects and to ensure the work continues for years to come,” says Mosley.
