Governor-General’s response to last night’s earthquake

The Governor-General, The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, has expressed her condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives in last night’s 7.5 magnitude earthquake. She also acknowledged the impact of the subsequent aftershocks.

“It has been an anxious time for New Zealanders in many parts of the country as they deal with damage to property and infrastructure, power cuts, and potential tsunami warnings. While this disruption continues, I urge all New Zealanders to attend to Civil Defence advice in their region, and to ensure that they stay in contact with friends, family and their community.”
