Crackdown on dairy robbers and youth offenders welcomed

“The Police initiative and action on at least three out of six recommendations that Crime Prevention Group had necessitated in its memo to the law and order authorities, is a pleasing outcome,” says Crime Prevention Group founder and president Sunny Kaushal. The community action group was formed after a spate of brutal attacks and aggravated robberies on dairies and small businesses. The group had also launched a nationwide petition constituting six points as its objective to force the Government for an action on rising crime.

“We are thankful to the media for helping us in highlighting the issue besides members of different community groups for their support, we are glad together we are making a headway for safer businesses and communities”, Sunny Kaushal says.

1. Our first demand was to set up a special Police Task Force exclusively to deal with crime on businesses, which authorities have accepted and set up a special task force of 20 officers in Auckland to focus solely on the robberies.

2. The implementation on more Police and High-visibility foot patrols from today will make a significant difference to deter offenders, and improve the much-required response times from Police when any incident happens.

3. A nationwide initiative with a reward scheme begins today to crack down on resellers of stolen goods, which has been one of key factors driving offenders targeting dairies for cigarettes.

Mr Kaushal said, “we expect the authorities would also consider our remaining recommendations” that include:

1. Review and toughen the existing law against assaults and robberies.

2. Review of the youth age to make them accountable for their serious crimes, or consider their parents to be accountable where the age of offenders is too young.

3. Shop owner’s right to defend themselves and to define the 'manner and mode of self-defense'.
