"The selection of Clayton Cosgrove as Labour's candidate for the Waimakariri Electorate has been welcomed by Labour activists throughout the country," said Labour's Manurewa Electorate campaign manager Daniel Newman.
Clayton Cosgrove was selected as Labour's candidate following the departure of the incumbent MP, the Rt. Hon. Mike Moore. Mr Cosgrove was selected ahead of eight other nominees.
"Clayton Cosgrove is a young, intelligent, enthusiastic candidate who enjoys strong support from Labour people throughout New Zealand. He is recognised as a close friend and strong supporter of Mike Moore. We value him as a candidate and we know that he will make a positive contribution to the Labour team," said Daniel Newman.
Mr Cosgrove has a long pedigree within the Labour Party. He is known as a moderate and a formidable campaign organiser. He managed Mr Moore's election campaigns in 1987 and 1990 and was instrumental in the organisation of Labour's 1993 campaign which saw the number of Labour MPs increase from 29 to 45. The National Party is very worried about the inclusion of Clayton Cosgrove in the Labour caucus.
"People like Roger Sowry are desperately trying to contrive red-herring in a forlorn attempt to de-rail Clayton's entry into Parliament. But it wont work. Clayton Cosgrove will win Waimakariri and Roger Sowry will get thrashed by Judy Keall (Labour) in Otaki," said Daniel Newman.
