30th Science & Technology Fair Set for Success

Following on from last month's extremely successful Manawatu Science Festival, Palmerston North's Te Manawa Science Centre this month hosts the Fonterra Manawatu Science and Technology Fair.

The fair opens on August 28. Exhibits are selected from intermediate and secondary school science fairs currently under way around the region, and the best will remain on display for at least two weeks. Organisers say interest has been high, and they expect well in excess of 300 entries.

This year marks the thirtieth time the event has been held. Organising committee spokesperson Bill MacIntyre says former committee members and judges have been invited to the awards evening, on August 28, where inaugural event chairman John Peart will be a speaker.

Bob Major, who heads the Marketing & Innovation division of major sponsor Fonterra, says his company's continued involvement with the fair is something he and his team get a lot of pleasure from.

"Here in Palmerston North, we have the world's largest dairy research centre. Getting involved in an event like this gives us a chance to show some of these budding colleagues of ours they can have a career in science, and have a lot of fun doing so," he said.

"To be a successful research scientist, you need curiosity and enthusiasm. The kids who get involved in this, and the teachers and parents backing them, have those qualities in spades, and it is great that we can help and support them."
