Intense Low-Pressure System Crossing New Zealand
MetService meteorologists have issued a heavy rain warning for Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne.
"An intense low-pressure system is expected to cross central New Zealand on Thursday", commented MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "It is likely to bring wind and rain and snow."
Rain currently affecting northern and eastern parts of the North Island is likely to be heaviest overnight in the ranges of Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne.
During Thursday, snow is likely to low levels in Canterbury. Snow amounts are expected to be noticeable, but not very heavy.
On Thursday evening westerly winds may become gale to severe gale force in the east of the North Island from Havelock North to Eketahuna. When the low-pressure system moves away on Friday and Saturday, a cold and squally southwesterly flow will cover the country with wind-chill making temperatures feel close to or below zero in many places.
Travelling conditions and outdoor pursuits will be difficult for the next few days. MetService weather warnings issued by the media will carry the latest details.
