TelstraClear to trial broadband speeds to 100mpbs

A trial delivering ultra-fast broadband speeds of up to 100mbps to selected residential customers doubles as a reminder to the Government that while it finalises its 10-year ultra-fast broadband plan TelstraClear is working hard to deliver these super-fast speeds next year.

TelstraClear CEO Allan Freeth says TelstraClear has invested more than $200m over 20 years in its hybrid fibre-coax (HFC) networks in Christchurch and Wellington.

"The most recent investment in the network was a $10 million upgrade to our Docsis3 technology, which will enable us to deliver up to 100mbps.

"We have done the hard yards in Christchurch and Wellington in terms of investment and commitment to delivering a state-of-the-art network to those cities. We are proud of that work, and proud of the fact that we have a network proven to deliver Government-targeted broadband speeds of up to 100mbps today," Mr Freeth says.

"These speeds put our Christchurch and Wellington customers in the box seat with access to a network that will take them into the world of ultra-fast broadband sooner than anyone else," Mr Freeth says.

The trial of 100mbps to the home has been announced in a series of billboards in Wellington, which light-heartedly suggest Communications Minister Steven Joyce can relax and put his feet up because ultra-fast broadband is already coming to town next year.

Mr Freeth says the light-hearted message is underlined by a serious point though.

"Because of our experience operating our HFC network in Wellington and Christchurch we know how to develop and deliver services and products, such as our soon to be-released T-box personal video recorder, that can take best advantage of a fibre network.

"Our customers in Wellington and Christchurch already benefit from our experience and know-how, and we are excited about delivering our expertise to the rest of New Zealand as the UFB network is rolled-out across the country, no matter who builds it.

Mr Freeth says those trialling the new ultra-fast speeds of up to 100mbp on TelstraClear's network will be invited to relay their experiences on www.warpspeed.co.nz providing followers with candid feedback on the service. They'll also chart their thoughts and ideas on how the speeds could be utilised across the UFB network once it is built.

"We're keen to gauge reaction to these new speeds and look at how our core group use them," he adds.
