Sir Paul Callaghan: a great New Zealander
Sir Paul Callaghan: a great New Zealander
Science New Zealand chairman, and CEO of AgResearch, Dr Tom Richardson on the loss of Sir Paul Callaghan:
"Science New Zealand mourns Sir Paul's passing, and extends our deepest condolences to his family.
"All of us have lost a great New Zealander, who was both a wonderful visionary and a very practical person.
"Sir Paul presented an utterly compelling vision that New Zealand can be the best place in the world in which to live and work. He backed this vision with clear thinking about how all of us, together, can make that happen through science-based innovation. His own career showed it could be done.
"We will remember his tremendous communication skills. He captured people's attention through humour and insight, and then challenged us to see additional ways of using our national resources. His ease of delivery and cogency of argument belied the effort he put into each opportunity.
"All of us in the science community will also remember a man of great personal character, of passion and of humour, of immense intellect and hard work, and of wide interests. He was always supportive and encouraging and great company.
"Sir Paul's national and international science achievements place him as one of New Zealand's greatest scientists; yet arguably it is his drive to ensure that science plays an even greater role in the future wealth and wellbeing of this country that will be his lasting achievement.
"He has inspired policymakers, business leaders, the public, and so many younger people as well as his fellow scientists.
"Even during recent months his generosity and commitment has continued to be evident. This includes actively backing an initiative for secondary school students and undergraduates, encouraging them to communicate how their science will make a difference for New Zealand, just as he did. Science New Zealand is proud to help continue that mission by supporting the Sir Paul Callaghan Award for Young Science Orators so that his outstanding life will continue to inspire further generations."
