Temperatures soar into record books

A spell of settled, sunny weather around the country has been breaking temperature records, NIWA figures show.

In particular, Auckland (Mangere) has experienced its hottest November temperature since records began in 1959 with 26.8°C recorded on Saturday, November 23.

The hottest spot to be in the country so far this month, however, was Clyde in Central Otago where the maximum temperature hit 30.3°C on November 19.

And around the country a number of centres have recorded temperatures that are well above average for this time of year.

Daily average maximum temperature, November 1-24

Auckland 21.4°C. (2°C above average and second highest average maximum November temperature)

Hamilton 21.7°C (1.8°C above average and fourth highest average maximum November temp)

Tauranga 21.9°C (1.8°C above average and second highest average maximum November temp)

Wellington 17.9°C (1.4°C above average)

Christchurch 19°C (near average at 0.1°C departure from Nov average)

Dunedin 16.7°C (0.6°C above average)


Highest daily November 2013 temperature so far:

Auckland (Mangere) 26.8°C (on November 23, highest since records began in 1959)

Hamilton (Airport) 26.2°C (on November 23, third highest since records began in 1990)

Tauranga (Airport) 26.9°C (on November 11, fourth highest since records began in 1990)

Wellington (Kelburn) 23.6°C (on November 23, equal highest since records began in 2004)

Christchurch (Airport) 27.7°C (on November 16, 32nd highest since records begin in 1953)

Dunedin (Musselburgh) 23.7°C (on November 10, 14th highest since records began in 1997)

(Note that larger urban centres often record temperatures at more than one location, and the near records listed above relate to the high quality sites reported regularly in NIWA’s monthly climate summaries.)
