Sugar versus fat for healthy diet

The debate on healthy diet and the arguments about reducing sugar and fat get an airing on Wednesday at the Auckland Nutrition Research Network seminar.

The seminar features public health expert Professor Rod Jackson, speaking on ‘Dietary fat and heart disease – if sugar’s out is fat in?’

The second half is presented by Dr Laurence Eyres who is speaking on ‘Coconut Oil - is it Heart Healthy?’

The seminar is open to the public (and to media by arrangement) and is on Wednesday 1October from 5.30pm to 7pm, at the Faculty of Medical Health (85 Park Road, opposite Auckland Hospital) in Lecture Theatre 505-011, Building 505, Grafton Campus.

Dr Rod Jackson is a professor of epidemiology in the Section of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the School of Population Health, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland.

Rod is medically trained, has a PhD in Epidemiology and is a member of the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine, and has published over 230 peer-reviewed papers. His main research interest for the last 30 years has been the epidemiology of chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

He is one of the architects of New Zealand risk-based clinical guidelines for managing CVD risk. He is currently involved in developing and implementing a web-based decision support system – PREDICT - to help primary care practitioners across the country systematically manage CVD and diabetes risk at the ‘moment of care’ for their practice populations.

Dr Laurence Eyres is an honorary academic in Nutrition with the University of Auckland.
