Native Frogs Need Protection From Mining

Coromandel Watchdog of Hauraki says the latest report on the conservation status of our native frogs is a good reason to ban mining on conservation land.

" The report released by the Minister of Conservation today shows that rare frogs are at serious risk from a range of threats including habitat loss. Archeys frog, a 70 million year old, unique frog species is currently under threat from mining in the Wharekirauponga area behind Whangamata" says coordinator Augusta Macassey-Pickard.

"Oceana Gold has been drilling in their habitat and has created a mess around drill sites (photo attached) which puts these tiny frogs in grave danger. The best thing the Minister could do to protect Archeys and other threatened species is ban mining on conservation land. She could also deny new access agreements to Oceana so that Archeys have a chance of survival in this habitat. If mining activities continue we will undermine the recovery of this amazing species."
