UN Envoy Gambari To Return To Burma Next Month
United Nations envoy to return to Myanmar next month
15 July 2008 - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Adviser to Myanmar is to return to the country next month, after receiving a letter of invitation from the South-East Asian nation's authorities, it was announced today.
Ibrahim Gambari was initially asked to visit the country in May, but the trip was postponed after Cyclone Nargis caused widespread devastation in the country.
He has visited the country three times since the Government crackdown on peaceful protestors last summer.
On previous visits, Mr. Gambari met with senior Government officials, as well as the detained pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
UN spokesperson Marie Okabe told reporters said that the Special Adviser was looking forward to continuing his dialogue with all concerned and that discussions were ongoing on the precise timing, programme and objectives of his visit.
