Personal details of Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan
Trooper Jason Thomas Brown

It is with deep regret that the Australian Defence Force announces the death of Trooper Jason Brown during operations in Afghanistan.

Trooper Brown was serving with the Special Operations Task Group when he tragically lost his life in a contact with Taliban insurgents, on Friday 13 August 2010.

29 year old Trooper Brown was from the Perth-based Special Air Service Regiment.

Trooper Brown leaves behind his parents and one sister who are currently receiving support from Defence.

Trooper Brown was born in Sydney, NSW in 1981. He joined the Army on 13th June 2000 and following Recruit and Initial Employment Training, Trooper Brown was posted to the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. In 2004 he joined the 4th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (Commando). On successful completion of the 2007 Selection Course, Trooper Brown became a member of the Special Air Service Regiment. This was his first tour to Afghanistan, although he had deployed previously on three occasions to East Timor.

Trooper Brown was an outstanding career soldier who always gave that little bit extra to his job and for his mates. He was highly regarded for his professionalism and commitment and will be sorely missed by all those who have served with him.

Trooper Brown has been awarded the Australian Active Service Medal with Clasp East Timor and Clasp ICAT, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Australian Service Medal with Clasp Timor –Leste, the United Nations Medal with Ribbon UNTAET, the NATO ISAF Medal, the Australian Defence Medal and the Infantry Combat Badge. TPR Brown has also been awarded the Returned from Active Service Badge from an earlier deployment.

During Trooper Jason Thomas Brown’s service in the Australian Army he deployed on the following Operations:

a. OPERATION TANAGER (East Timor) – Jan – May 2001;

b. OPERATION CITADEL (East Timor) – May – Oct 2003;

c. OPERATION ASTUTE (East Timor) – May –Aug 2006; and

d. OPERATION SLIPPER (Afghanistan) – Jun –Aug 2010.
