General Assembly President Confers With Leaders At High-Level Debate

General Assembly President Joseph Deiss today met with a number of leaders attending the high-level debate and thanked them for their positive statements and determination to press ahead with efforts to achieve the internationally agreed targets known as the Millennium Development Goals ("http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/"MDGs).

Mr. Deiss had discussions with Malawi’s President Bingu wa Mutharika, who is also the current chair of the African Union (AU). He also exchanged views with Aleksander Kwasniewski, the former president of Poland, and the Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan.

In addition, Mr. Deiss conferred with the Vice Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn, a number of foreign ministers from Asian countries, the Secretary of State of San Marino Antonella Mularoni and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.

The Assembly President said he appreciated United States President Barack Obama’s recent call to the international community to throw its weight behind the Middle East peace process, and hoped that the General Assembly will use the prevailing positive atmosphere to support the conclusion of a settlement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Mr. Deiss also said he appreciated the statements of Member States to the Assembly’s annual general debate this week in which they recognized the UN’s central role in global governance.

Yesterday, Mr. Deiss met with Mr. Obama; Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych; Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc; Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan; Swiss President Doris Leuthard; the President of Montenegro, Filip Vujanovic; and the Foreign Minister of the Comoros, Fahmi Said Ibrahim.
