Pike River: Letter to John Key from Commonwealth Sec-Gen

Letter to Prime Minister John Key from Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma on the Pike River Mine tragedy

24 Nov 2010

I write to you at this time of national mourning in New Zealand to convey our collective and sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the 29 miners who have lost their lives, together with our recognition of the valiant efforts of the civil and emergency services.

The initial hopes in recent days and now sense of despair and loss have been felt by fellow Commonwealth citizens and governments around the world as we have witnessed the Pike River Mine tragedy.

In this dark hour for the people of New Zealand, we extend our sympathy and solidarity to you all.

Kamalesh Sharma Commonwealth Secretary-General London
